A financial crime compliance consultant and prolific author who works in the city of London has released his fourth book of poetry which is divided into three sections looking at personal growth, business and politics; and love and relationships in today’s drowning society.
Tolu A Akinyemi is fast gaining a reputation as a poet extraordinaire since launching his first poetry book Dead Lions Don’t Roar. This latest collection is very timely and apt with the uncertain political landscape faced by the UK. The didactic collection truly focuses on pertinent life issues.
Here, Anna Toms comments on Tolu A Akinyemi’s latest book of poetry to advise if it has a place in today’s literature saturated, busy society.
“As a busy executive reading anything not work orientated at the moment is truly a luxury. I have little time to waste and always dread that feeling of disappointment of having invested time in a book that doesn’t pay back.
“A portable book is always more appealing to read on my commute, so Never Play Games With The Devil scored it’s first point with that. The cover which depicts a chess game between a snake and a person amused and intrigued me enough for me to pop in my bag, just incase I was fortuitous to get a seat on the bus.
“My luck was in, and once seated I opened Never Play Games With The Devil, hoping to while away my 25 minute journey across the city. I couldn’t believe how quick the journey went! What a book.
“I have to be honest, I don’t place myself as a poetry fan. But the fact that I loved this book should therefore speak volumes. Poetry to me was part of English Literature studies, or a funny ditty on a birthday card. Never Play Games With Devil has opened my eyes, and my heart, to this genre of writing.
“Tolu’s penmanship evokes every emotion. Makes the brain work on something other than career goals and jobs in hand.
“The four poems on Hemisphere’s stand out as commentary on how different each is. Yet the advice remains the same on living life. The references to social media, business, trading, leaders and religion throughout the collection really make you think about this life we live in. The work we do, the choices we make.
“Bad Governance is a leading light in the collection. What a comment on today’s society. If you don’t read much, and the whole collection isn’t for you, you must at least read this poem. Please!
“Lazy Youth also stood out as a reminder all men are equal and not to cast stone’s where situations are not understood. It creates a fission of irritation in the reader, which is interesting, and will be related to by many of today’s younger people.
“The final section, I know I will regularly read again. I imagine will also use some of the key lines as quotes in my day to day life, such is the impact. One Woman should be included in every speech and used as a mantra for marriage. Such inspirational writing on mundane, everyday issues.
“In conclusion a highly recommended read, and well worth ordering from Amazon.”
