An action-packed Sunday saw Newcastle Eagles, London Lions and Cheshire Phoenix emerge victorious as the opening weekend of the BBL Championship came to a close.
Newcastle took a seven point, 103-110, away victory down South against Plymouth Raiders in a very close game. Despite a slow start, Plymouth began to pull things back in the second half, with some fantastic plays from top-point scorers Josh Wilcher, Rashad Hassan and newbie Ron Mvouika, all combining for 61 points.
However, it wasn’t enough to earn them a win over the Eagles, as Rahmon Fletcher racked up an almighty 32 points himself, alongside key new signing CJ Gettys, who got his first double-double for the Toon side, with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
The capital was buzzing today as fans packed into the Copper Box Arena to witness the debut of Love Island and GB International star Ovie Soko in London Lions’ clash with Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks.
The 28-year-old couldn’t have asked for a better debut either, as he picked up a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds and was Lions’ second highest scorer in the team.
Thanks to Soko’s impressive debut and yet another additional double-double from Brandon Peel, 18 points and 10 rebounds, the 2018-19 league champions were able to pick up their first win of the new BBL Championship campaign, 88-72.
And in the North West derby, Cheshire Phoenix emerged 69-77 victors over Manchester Giants, backed by a combined 32 points from both Parker Jackson-Cartwright and Mike Ochereobia.
