Bracknell-based Absolutely Fitness is issuing a warning against the dangerous growing trend of dry-scooping, which sees gym-goers consuming pre-workout powder supplements without diluting them first.
Generally the main ingredient in the supplements is caffeine which is combined with sugar and other energy boosting stimulants. When taken correctly, by turning the powder into a drink, the supplement can help to improve energy and stamina. However, videos of users swallowing scoops of powder then washing them down with a few sips of water are going viral on TikTok and generating millions of likes.
Harry Smith, Club Manager at Absolutely Fitness in Bracknell, commented:
“The claim by those uploading videos that dry-scooping is a more efficient way of taking the supplement is unfounded and can have a negative effect on health. We want people to get the most out of their workout regime by exercising safely, so are totally discouraging anyone from following the fad.”
One scoop of the powder can contain up to the equivalent of five cups of coffee and taking too many energy stimulants can cause heart issues, such as palpitations, as well as an increase in blood pressure.
Researchers form the American Academy of Pediatrics recently analysed 100 TikTok videos that used #preworkout and found that only eight showed the supplements being taken correctly. They noted that inhaling the powder directly can cause pneumonia or choking.
TikTok user Briatney Portillo, who has over six thousand followers, suffered a heart attack after dry-scooping and has uploaded videos about her experience to warn others.
Harry added:
“Put simply, dry-scooping is dangerous. The team at Absolutely Fitness is happy to give advice to anyone who is looking to start using a pre-workout supplement to ensure it is consumed correctly.”
