London, 22 March 2022 – Today, the Royal Docks Team announced the open call for applications to their successful Royal Docks Internship Programme. The programme was launched in 2020, through which 14 interns spent 12 months working across a range of sectors within industry, gaining a positive kick start to their careers. This initiative follows the commitment from the Mayor of London and the Mayor of Newham to invest in the skills and talents of local people and create more youth employment opportunities, especially in response to the economic impact of the pandemic.

Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, Mayor of Newham and Co-chair of the Royal Docks Enterprise Zone Board, said: “I am delighted to know that a new group of people will benefit from the Royal Docks Internship Programme as they apply to join this second-year open call. The Royal Docks is a treasure trove of opportunity with a plethora of industry and sector organisations involved. I look forward to seeing this year’s applicants taking up industry and internship opportunities and following in the footsteps of the last cohort as they take their first steps into the world of work and a prosperous and joyous career.”

As the Royal Docks continues to emerge as a hub for business, economic and technological innovation, employers from technology, manufacturing, food production, transportation, and the creative industries all stand ready to offer up to 20 internships to those keen to apply. Last year, some of the successful applicants attained placements with industry partners such as Tate & Lyle Sugars, London Borough of Newham, Higgins Partnerships, Atlantic Pacific, Royal Docks Team, Redrow Housing, and M&A Carpentry, to name but a few. This year applicants will have similar sector opportunities. However, there will be greater emphasis on SMEs as new partners and organisations come on board.

Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills said: “This is an amazing time for young people to start a career in the Royal Docks area. An internship is a great way to find out more about an organisation or industry while also getting paid and mentored throughout the process.

“This is exactly the kind of programme we want to see replicated across other areas of London – helping Londoners into good work in future proofed industries.

“The Royal Docks Internship Programme has already helped kick start the careers of 14 young people and I hope it continues to play a vital role in supporting other young Newham residents to develop successful careers.”

Applications are open from today to anyone between the ages of 18-30, with no prior formal qualifications needed. Successful applicants will benefit from a London Living Wage and ongoing personal development and mentoring delivered by the employers over the duration of their 12-month placement. Applications from the disabled community and minority ethnic backgrounds are encouraged. Applications close on 10 April 2022 with successful applicants due to commence their internship on 27 June 2022.

Kate Sedwell Co-Founder & COO of Atlantic Pacific said “The Royal Docks Internship Programme has been a lifeline for Atlantic Pacific during the pandemic. Supporting local organisations like ours with amazing young people based in the local area has really allowed us to cement and grow our activity in the area in a really meaningful way. Through this programme we have found two amazingly talented young people who are eager to learn and work as a team to help us achieve our vision for Newham. They have now joined the AP family and we are looking forward to employing them beyond the internship programme.”
