Research has found that some Brits have never consumed toad in the hole believing that it’s a fictional dish. Puddings are also in danger of extinction with 18% believing the spotted dick is imaginary, and 13% believing that Eton Mess doesn’t count as an actual dish. With more dishes on the extinction list, it’s safe to ask what people are eating and why these tasty delicacies are dying out.
According to the research, people aged between 18-30 say that old school staples like pie, mash and liquor and a simple Ploughman’s lunch could be non-existent over the next few decades because Gen Z have never tried them.
Some of Britain’s finest food has been a staple in many homes for generations. Sadly, some foods are not so popular anymore, with some dishes moving from cookbooks to history books. Delicacies such as Laverbread saw a decline around the mid-20th century as the popularity in readymade processed meals was on the rise.
The decline was so much that in the 1970s BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming program saw it as a food that was to be assigned to the history books. Times and perhaps tastes have changed, as according to research, Gen Z are at risk of archiving more of these classic dishes.
The relationship between the British and food has grown over the years. Influences from across Europe and many other continents have culminated into a plethora of delicious delicacies that can cater to every palette.
