Ninja Theory, the Cambridge-based, BAFTA award-winning video game development studio, has been announced as a sponsor of FXP Festival 2022, the free education initiative for Cambridgeshire students aged 12 – 19 years old.
Through the Festival’s game design and development events, students gain an exciting insight into what careers in the technology, creative, digital and game industries have to offer. This year, FXP Festival, which is a registered charity, will once again have three core modules that will be directed by experts in the gaming industry, including Mark Ogilvie, Creative Director at Jagex, who will lead the Game Concept & Design module. The Game Narrative and Game Production modules will also return for 2022, providing students with the opportunity to focus on both the technical and creative elements of game development.
During the virtual, nine-week programme and the three-day in-person games jam, students work in teams to create an original concept for, or design and develop, a computer game, while spending time learning from game industry leaders. This year, participants will benefit from mentoring sessions with the experts from Ninja Theory to enhance their creativity and coding skills.
Industry specialists from Ninja Theory will also be part of this year’s judging panel, and students will have the opportunity to win work experience at the game studio and an exclusive studio tour. The in-person games jam will conclude with a careers talk and prize-giving ceremony, where students will hear advice and guidance about academic and career opportunities from the Ninja Theory team.
Dom Matthews, Studio Head, Ninja Theory, said: “A core goal for us at Ninja Theory is to nurture the next generation of game developers, so we’re thrilled to be involved with an initiative that sets out to enhance the creativity capabilities of those across our region. The future of video games is a bright one and we’re excited to be a part of opening the door of game development to the stars of tomorrow.”
Alison Taylor, FXP Festival Co-founder and Trustee and Managing Director of Conscious Communications, said: “FXP Festival is a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop skills, such as creative writing and coding, and to work with industry experts to gain a better understanding of the opportunities available to them on their doorstep. One of our motivations for running FXP Festival is to drive social mobility in Cambridgeshire and Ninja Theory’s support will help students gain valuable insight into the game industry.”
