New FAT Karting League Set to Revolutionise Motorsport Accessibility

Dec 10, 2024

Motorsport is at a turning point. FAT International and the Smedley Group have partnered to launch the FAT Karting League (FKL), a revolutionary initiative aimed at making motorsport accessible and appealing to aspiring young racers from all walks of life. Building upon the legacy of the Global Karting League, FKL is redefining grassroots racing with a focus on inclusivity and affordability, inspiring the next generation of talent and setting a new benchmark for the sport.

Lower costs make karting more accessible

The FAT Karting League is designed to break down the financial and logistical barriers that have historically made motorsport inaccessible. A season of fixed cost racing at the best tracks in the UK starts at just £3,800 for drivers from age six. FKL’s Junior Pro Series is priced at £5,300, making it 96 percent cheaper than the current system for drivers on the path to F4, which costs an average of £125,000 —the initiative opens doors for talented young racers from diverse backgrounds to compete by removing some of the barriers that held them back. Operating across multiple global locations – starting with the US and others to be announced soon, FKL offers a clear progression route, supporting drivers from entry-level karting to move up the racing ladder.

Electric karts, outdoor tracks

The FKL features outdoor racing using cutting-edge electric karts designed by F1 engineers, delivering an elite experience for aspiring racers. These high-performance karts can achieve speeds of up to 60 mph, combining the latest EV technology with zero tailpipe emissions for an exceptional racing experience. Each championship consists of nine rounds, with two categories—Regional and Pro Championships—held at some of the best outdoor tracks in the UK such as Whilton Mill and Buckmore Park. The calendar ensures young drivers have access to world-class facilities as they develop their skills in a competitive and engaging environment.

Unique F4 prize for global winner

What truly sets the FAT Karting League apart is its groundbreaking reward. Top performers from each global hub will compete in the FAT World Finals, vying for this coveted F4 seat. The ultimate champion will secure a fully-funded racing seat in the FIA British F4 Championship, for all rounds of the 2026 series. This prize offers young racers a direct pathway to professional motorsport, providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transition from grassroots karting to the global racing stage.

UK and US karting hubs to launch in 2025

The FAT Karting League is set to launch its first hub in the UK in January 2025. In early Q2 2025, FKL will expand to the U.S. with the opening of two new hubs, introducing the thrill of accessible racing to one of the world’s most vibrant motorsport markets. These launches mark the beginning of a global expansion, reinforcing FKL’s mission to deliver inclusive and affordable racing experiences to a diverse and growing audience worldwide.

Innovative format to appeal to the next generation

The FAT World Finals is set to revolutionise motorsport with a dynamic event format that challenges traditional racing norms, inspired by innovative sports franchises such as soccer’s Kings League and Icon League. Designed to captivate today’s youth, this approach blends elements from gaming, streaming and creator culture, resulting in a fresh and engaging experience. By embracing modern trends and speaking the language of the next generation, the FAT Karting League aims to make motorsport and grassroots racing more exciting, accessible and relevant for younger audiences.
