A new play, which is dedicated to every child in Africa who is denied the opportunity of education, has been released in the form of a book to celebrate and honour its cause.

Penned by Dele Kogbe, The Girl Who Dares The King, is reviewed here by Anna Berry, literature graduate and entrepreneur.

“The Girl Who Dares The King struck me immediately as having almost Shakespearian qualities. Starting with dialogue between a family whose child is leaving to go to college, you immediately get a sense of stage setting, and a religious under current.

“The advice given in scene two by Comrade Akanji: to 19 year old Abike is sweet and kind, but takes her to a place where she feels comfortable to talk about politics with him, and issues with the country become clear.

“The commentary is warm, open and hints at impending disaster, a theme that continues through scene three.  It is a refreshing read that depicts a 19 year old African girl with strong opinions and insights who speaks openly and is listened to. And continues to focus on how to champion girls’ education ….

“The characters are well rounded, the language enjoyable, the storyline clear and open, and most importantly the entire script is plausible, where you can imagine the scenes with actors playing out on stage as you read.

‘There is also the use of a light at the start and end of each scene and I started to feel the light was symbolic to the interaction and guiding the way to solutions. Without giving too much away on the storyline, the journey takes you through laughter, emotions and tears.

“It is a long time since I have read a screen play or play in the format of how the actors would receive it, but I enjoyed it immensely. I would recommend The Girl Who Dares The King to a host of readers across all age groups, but especially to young aspiring women and gents who wish to support aspiring women.”
