Tips for maintaining your electric scooter

One of the best things about owning electric scooters is how much bang you get for your buck. If you’re a city commuter, you can travel at similar speeds to a car, bus or motorcycle while paying a fraction of the initial cost. Not only that, but it’s also electric, so you don’t even have to pay for fuel! Scooters are also lovely and robust, so no need to worry about expensive engine trouble or constant breakdown. That is if you look after them properly. So how can you keep your scooter in tip top shape? Let’s take a look.

Get the basics right

Don’t worry; there’s nothing complicated to remember; you just have to get the basics right to keep your scooter healthy. The biggest worries are the most obvious: The tyres, the battery and the deck. To keep your tyres working correctly without punctures or other problems, you need to make sure you check the pressure regularly and keep them clean so you don’t get a puncture. Keeping the battery charged is also essential, but keep it around 50% because too full or too empty can damage it. And finally, make sure the deck is clean and clear of debris and that the bolts are tightened, so it doesn’t let you down.

Look after your battery

We mentioned your battery above, but it’s hard to emphasise its importance to ensure it functions well. It’s the heart of your scooter, you won’t get far without it, and it can even be dangerous if you don’t look after it properly. To keep your battery in good health, you shouldn’t let it run flat or keep it on charge all the time, and you should also avoid letting it get too wet or stay out in the sun for too long. All of these things can damage it, leading to fires if you’re not careful. A good rule of thumb is to stop using it if you notice it swelling, bulging, or if you’ve left it uncharged for more than three months.

Help your tyres to help you

Almost as essential as your battery are your tyres, which will keep you on the road and make sure you have a nice smooth ride. Keeping them pumped up is vital because most punctures are caused by soft tyres getting hammered against the wheel’s frame, but did you know that letting them get dirty can also be a problem? Rainwater can wash dirt and foreign objects onto your wheels, and these can get inside the tyre, rubbing against the inner tube-like sandpaper until eventually, it wears a hole inside. It can cause a puncture at the worst possible times and can even be dangerous for you if you’re going fast. Keeping a repair kit or some tyre sealant handy is always a good idea, so you’re never stranded.

Stock up on spares

No matter how well you look after your scooter, accidents happen, and you can’t always prevent them.
